Aquaculture

The NSW Department of Planning has contributed to NSW Government planning policy in regard to aquaculture. State Environmental Planning Policy No 62 encourages a sustainable aquaculture industry.

North Coast Sustainable Aquaculture Strategy

The North Coast Sustainable Aquaculture Strategy for Land-Based Aquaculture is a joint initiative of a number of State agencies. It assists investors and developers, consultants and planners to prepare and submit development applications that lead to ecologically sustainable practices. It will also help local councils and other regulatory agencies in assessing proposals. [PDF]

Copies of the Strategy are available from our Information Centre for $40 plus postage. Phone 1300 305 695 or email information@planning.nsw.gov.au. You can also find copies of the strategy at the NSW Department of Primary Industries website.

NSW Oyster Industry Sustainable Aquaculture Strategy

The NSW Oyster Industry Sustainable Aquaculture Strategy identifies priority oyster aquaculture areas (POAA) and provides for the protection of these areas from development that may adversely affect the environmental conditions required for viable oyster aquaculture. The Department has published two circulars related to this strategy:

The Department practice note Aquaculture - what level of environmental assessment does aquaculture require? may also be of use to aquaculture applicants.
