Environmental assessment policy

Mining, petroleum production and extractive industries

State Environmental Planning Policy (Mining, Petroleum Production and Extractive Industries) 2007 (SEPP)

State Environmental Planning Policy (Mining, Petroleum Production and Extractive Industries) 2007 (SEPP) consolidates and updates planning provisions related to these industries as well as ensuring that potential environmental and social impacts are adequately addressed during the assessment and determination of development proposals.

Guideline for establishing and operating community consultative committees for mining projects

The Department has also prepared a Guideline for establishing and operating community consultative committees for mining projects (Department of Planning 2007) [PDF]. A community consultative committee will generally be required for major new mines approved under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

The major purpose of the committee is to provide a forum for open discussion between the mining company, the community, the local council and other stakeholders. The committee also provides a means for keeping the wider community informed on issues directly relating to the mine's environmental performance, and community relations. The guidelines apply to all major new mines across NSW, including new coal mines in the Hunter Valley and new gold and copper mines.

Coal mines and associated infrastructure: EIS guideline (Department of Urban Affairs and Planning, April 2000) [PDF] identifies factors to be considered when preparing an environmental impact statement.
