NSW Coastline Cycleway

This program provides grant funding to non-metropolitan coastal councils to improve cycling facilities by constructing the NSW Coastline Cycleway route. Grants are to be matched dollar-for-dollar by the participating councils.

The Coastline Cycleway program was announced in March 2003 to provide seed funding as part of a larger coastal protection package. Between 2003 and 2007, the NSWCC program has funded 56 projects with grant funding of more than $5.4 million, resulting in the construction of more than 59 kilometres of cycleway. A further $1.5 million was announced in the 2007-08 budget.

The Coastline Cycleway project is based on a 30-year-old vision of retired urban planning academic Elias Duek-Cohen. The 1,500km route stretching from the Queensland border to the Victorian border was originally defined in a set of five studies which were co-ordinated by Bicycle NSW and largely funded by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority.

The route defined in these studies is currently being reviewed by the Department of Planning (DOP) in conjunction with councils, other NSW Government agencies and local bicycle user groups to ensure that the route remains viable and that current local priorities are accommodated. The route alignment is shown in maps held by DOP. Grant funding is available to councils for cycle projects on this revised route.

The route aims to avoid major roads and highways and link together separate communities along the NSW coastline. Approximately 300km (or 20 per cent) of the route is now either in place or funded in the form of shared pedestrian/cycle paths or on-road cycle lanes along local streets. The key benefits include improved and more sustainable transport choices, increased tourism, better coastal recreation access and the growth of bicycle-tourism industries.
